Ger Wolfe

Well-known as a singer-songwriter and no stranger to traditional singing, Ger Wolfe takes to the Song road this Spring  with his 10th full album, this time with a bit of a twist, a casadh.

Here we have songs from ‘The Ballyvourney Collection’ gathered in 1913-14 in Gaeltacht Múscraí, North West Cork by A.Martin Freeman, published in 1920-21 in the journal of ‘The Folksong Society’. The collection remained largely obscure until unearthed again by Seán Ó Riada in the 1960’s while a little later the song ‘Aisling Geal’ was made famous by his son Peadar O’ Riada with Iarla Ó Lionáird.

This beautiful album is the fruit of the last 7 years learning with Ger delving deeper into the melody and poetry of the rich heritage of traditional song with some great encouragement along the way from singers from Múscrai, a place he has called home for almost 30 years.

Ger shares his own take on some well-known and other rarely-heard songs including ‘Fáinnín Geal An Lae’, ‘Réidh Cnoc Mná Duíbh’ agus ‘An Clár Bog Deal’. On the recording itself fellow musicians Paul Frost (bass), Edel Sullivan (fiddle), Mick O’ Brien (pipes/whistle), Richard Lucey (accordeon) and Kevin Murphy (cello) bring subtle and sublime accompaniment.

The first single from the album “Fáinnin Geal an Lae” will be released on Raggedy Records on March 14th followed by the full album release on April 25th.

Ger’s Solo Spring tour includes songs and tunes from the new album alongside well known work from previous ones including ‘The Curra Road’, ‘The Lark of Mayfield’, ‘Hello Gorgeous’ and many more besides. Come and hear Ger singing his heart out with songs old and the new, and tunes thrown in for good measure, a must for all fans
